Natural disasters have always been the biggest challenge for mankind. There was no perfect prediction ever on the intensity of any natural disaster which could help the Governments and volunteers to evacuate people from the spot and thereby saving many invaluable lives.
Great news is that we are marching towards achieving that perfection.
How? By means of Data Science that helps Artificial Intelligence.
What is Data Science? It is the mastermind behind Artificial Intelligence. It links data of similar nature to be used for predicting the future with the help of Data Analytics. Data Analytics functions with the help of Statistics. All of these helping hands are interconnected to make Artificial Intelligence to be the perfect solution for our biggest challenges.
We have had painful disasters in the past, both natural and artificial.
Well, artificial intelligence can address the natural disasters at this point in time. To address the disasters that are man-made, may be we need to wait for longer. Achievable, not impossible.
Let's see how the technology can help reducing the damage caused by a natural disaster.
Step 1 is to make our objective clear: We are going to save lives and prevent damage to economies.
Step 2: Identify the most vulnerable populations. Collect the data of previous disasters. Basically, link the data of similar nature and apply statistics to identify the most vulnerable populations. We have to collect all the data including the quality of infrastructure, history of earthquakes in the area etc.
Step 3: Apply Natural Intelligence on this data to predict forthcoming disaster. Write programs that will tell us when exactly is the next disaster going to happen and what preventive measures can be taken.

It looks simple in just three steps, yeah, it is actually very simple if you got that determination.
Once you have identified the possible disaster accurately, next step is to take preventive actions. You cannot take that risk of checking the accuracy of your finding. This is not some Predict and Win Lottery, This is Technology meets Humanitarian activities.

The role of Big data
Gather the Big data to reduce risks from disasters. Big data plays a key role in Data Analytics as it is a complex data processing system. Big data does the studying job for us on trends, human behavioral patterns, associations, linking the data of similar nature and so on. The data can be collected from a variety of sources, including unstructured sources like social media, high-resolution satellite imagery and drones. These data sets can be analysed to provide insights for policymakers about the impact of disasters. This includes helping to monitor recovery, focusing on early warning, and assessing resilience. The most important intelligence
Artificial intelligence has become the most valuable in terms of disaster prevention as governments now can anticipate disasters and reduce risks through preventive measures such as early warning systems, safety drills, and resilient infrastructure. We must remember that the data that matters the most is the number of lives saved.
